German Mauser M 1898 rifle. M 1898 aA bayonet. Superb bright polished fullered pipe back blade. German makers name and trademark : R. Θ M. SOEMMERDA (= Rheinische Metallwaaren und Maschinenfabrik- Sömmerda in Thüringen (1899-1902) in two rows on the ricasso. Blade spine is Saxony marked: AR over 01.(=Cypher of König Albert von Sachsen (Saxony) 1873-1902) Excellent bright polished pommel with inspection marking. T-O slot and crossguard with small backward swept quillon. Excellent ribbed one piece wooden grip, secured to the blade tang by two screw bolts. Oil hole in grip. No flash guard. Excellent black leather scabbard with clear tooling. All stitches intact. Bright polished fittings with no dents.
It is known the R.M. Soemmerda marked M 1898 aA bayonets were made for Saxony only, and only from 1901 till 1903.
