Experimental Mauser M88/95 rifle. Model 95-17 trials bayonet. Excellent bright finished fullered blade with German maker's name : Eisengiesserei-und Schlossfabrik A. G. Velbert in a half circle on the ricasso.
Prussian W over date: '17 and Crown over a Gothic inspection mark on the blade spine. T-O slot in the pommel is altered by an insert and changed to a short mortise with a T slot. The length of the mortise is now 30 mm. Crossguard replaced by a new crossguard with a very small ring (0,9 cm!) to fit the cleaning rod and not the muzzle. Clear German controle marking on the new crossguard. Very good wooden grips secured with screws and bolts to the blade tang. Left grip with a crack. Excellent modified flash guard.
Excellent, unmarked and standard bright finished, but somewhat stained WWI steel scabbard with no dents. Some spots with light pitting to the reverse side only.
An extremely rare trials bayonet for the experimental M 88/95 Mauser rifle which later became the Mauser M 98 rifle. Made in 1917 from an existing M84/98 Second model bayonet. Not much is known about this bayonet. Only recorded by Roy Williams in his book: The collectors book of German bayonets 1680-1945 Part One Page 508- Item 364.(see last pict.)
