German Mauser M 1898 Rifle. First model M 98/05 bayonet (aA). Serial number 129 on pommel. Excellent- bright finished fullered "Butcher" blade with crisp German makers name: V.C. SHILLING over SUHL on the ricasso. Blade spine is crisp marked with the Prussian royal cypher W and date (19)12 and a crowned inspection mark. The blade shows some light stains of exposing it to sea water. Excellent bright pommel and crossguard with "High Ears" and quillon. Crossguard with German Navy marking: W.W.6462 (= Werft Wilhelmshaven). No flash guard. Two German inspection marking on the pommel and a single one near the mortise slot. Excellent ribbed walnut grips secured to the blade tang by two marked screw bolts. Oil hole in grip. T-O slot in pommel.
Excellent+ scarce black leather scabbard with bright finished fittings. All stitches intact and no serieus dents to the marked fittings. Top mount is unit marked: R.157.
These early M98/05 aA bayonets marked W.W. were issued to sailors at the warf of Wilhelmshaven and are rare.
