English M 1856 pattern Pioneer sawback sword by WILKINSON-LONDON. Unit marked.
English M 1856 Pattern Pioneer sawback sword. Excellent+ bright finished plain sawback blade with a large false edge and sharp teeth. English makers name: WILKINSON-LONDON, a Wilkinson inspection marking: Crown over 49 over W and the date: 12 '96. on the ricasso. Reverse side is marked: /I\ over WD, a Wilkinson inspection marking: Crown over 49 over W and a blade testing X mark. Excellent non-detachable brass hilt with a single B shaped brass single hand guard with a knot slit in top and a forward swept quillion. Brass grips are riveted to the blade tang by four steel rivets. Top of the quillon is dated and Unit marked: 4/1897 over V over 1. N n. over 1 (= First Battalion of the Northhamptonshire Regiment.)
Excellent black leather scabbard with brass mounts. Leather body is Wilkinson marked: /I\ , Crown over W and 49. Top mount with oval frog stud. All stitches intact, no dents to the top mount and a small indentation to the chape only.
Comes with its Excellent leather sword knot with two slides as found

In the years 1881–1914, the two regular battalions of the Northhamptonshire Regiment saw overseas service in Hong Kong, India, Singapore and South Africa, with the regiment receiving battle honours for actions in the North West Frontier Province and the Second Boer War.[4]
