Dutch M 1870/73 Remington Rolling Block Sappers and Engineers socket bayonet (ABCN1096)(K339)(JN0)
Dutch M 1870/73 Remington Rolling Block Sappers & Engineers Carbine. Serial number: 3 on the shank. Excellent bright finished cruciform blade, very similar to the M 1870 Beaumont rifle socket bayonet. Dutch inspection marking Crown over N on the shank. Excellent short socket with a mortise slot and more rare two part locking-ring with two screws. (See: Bayonets of the Remington Cartridge Periode by Jerry Janzen. Page 72.) Socket is wider and much shorter than a M 1871 Beaumont Vitali rifle bayonet. Please see last picture for a comparison. MRD 18,8 mm. Total length: 570 mm.
Extremely rare socket bayonet. Only 1.000 Remington Rolling block carbines were made in Belgium for the Dutch Sappers and Engineers. (See: very last picture: Dutch Engineers in action, around 1890)
This is the second one we have found in more than 30 years!
This model will also fit the Dutch M 1870/1887 Marechaussee carbine as a replacement for the folding bayonet.
