Chassepot M 1866 rifle. Serial number: D 5395 on the crossguard. Very good fullered bright finished yataghan blade marked with French maker mark and date: Mr'e. Imp ale de Mutzig aout. 1867 (= Made by the Imperial Mutzig Arsenal, August 1867) crisp on the blade spine. Right ricasso with two French inspection markings. Revers side is marked: 6. Excellent+ brass grip with a blued spring. Bright finished crossguard with guillion and muzzle ring. MRD: 17.5 mm. Crossguard is German (Prussian) unit marked: L. I. 2. 124. (= Landwehr Infantry Regiment No.2,. rifle 124 ) 3 French inspection markings on the left side of the quillon. Tightening screw on top of the muzzle ring
Excellent+ bright finished unaltered steel scabbard with some user spurs only but no serieus dents. Serial number: S 84303
Chassepot bayonets, made by the Mutzig Arsenal are not common. This one is made in the Imperial era and has an early date: August 1867
This one was captured by the German army during the French -German war 1870 - 1871 and re-used during WWI by a German Landwehr Infantry Regiment
