English M1903 bayonet by EFD, with Patt. 1903 MkII* Land scabbard. (ABCN578-2-a)(K 181) (JN 57-1)
British SMLE .303 rifle. Superb bright finished double edged M 1903 blade with a central rib. The first cm is blackened. The blade is very crisp marked on de ricasso: Crown over ER over 1903 and dated: 1'04. The British maker's trademark: EFD (= Enfield) is on the reverse side of the ricasso and an Enfield inspection mark: Crown over 66 over E and a /I\
The blade spine is twice faint marked with an Enfield marking: Crown over 16 over E. Excellent darkened pommel with an oil hole and a T-slot in the pommel. Darkened crossquard with a muzzle ring. MRD 16.5 mm. Excellent+ wooden grips secured by two screws bolts. Both grips are Enfield stamped.
Excellent+ correct for this model and rare London brown Pattern 1888 MKII* Land leather scabbard with a long, permanent attached, leather belt loop with two tinned copper rivets. The belt loop is marked: Crown over E8 over E and the cuff is stitched on the right side. The reverse side of the leather body is crisp stamped: /I\ , and twice stamped: Crown over E8 over E. It is dated: '03 There is a large leather internal chape. All stitches intact. (Ref: Anthony Carter; AC114)
This is a M 1903 bayonet. The first models were converted from M 1888 MkI, II and III model blades and new pommels to fit the M.L.E. rifle. This one and his scabbard was made as a Pattern 1903 bayonet in January 1904.
The M 1903 was used for a very long period and served in two wars.
