German (Bavarian) M 1898 nA bayonet. Bavarian Unit marked. (ABC N 1552-2)(K 427)(JN82-2)
Mauser M98 rifle. Excellent- bright polished pipeback blade with German makers name: V.C. SCHILLING over SUHL on the ricasso. There is a very light field sharpening and some action spurs only. Bavarian King's cipher: Crown over O over 06 (=King Otto of Bayern, 1906) and a Bavarian inspection mark all crisp on the blade spine. Excellent pommel with two Bavarian inspection markings and a Bavarian unit marking on the crossguard: B. 18. R. 7. 119. (= 18th. Bavarian Infantry Regiment: Prinz Ludwig Ferdinand, Home base Landau (Paltz), 7th. Company, and rifle number 119 ) and a crisp inspection marking. Excellent wooden grips fixed to the blade tang by two screw bolts.
Very good tooled black leather scabbard. Top mount is also Bavarian unit marked, near matching! : B. 18. R. 7. 127. All stitches intact and no serieus dents to the fittings. 2 Bavarian inspection markings on the scabbard throat. The leather body shows old stitch repairs only.
Bavarian marked M 1889 bayonets are pretty rare! This is a bayonet with a history: If this one could talk!
The Bavarian 18th Infantry Regiment, took part on the invasie in Belgium in WWI. It was a part of the German 6e Armee under the command of Kronprinz Rupprecht von Bayern. During the duration of WWI, they stayed on the Western frontline. They lost lots of officers and soldiers in places like: Matz, Avre, Ypern, On the Somme 8/1916, Arras, Wytschaete-Messina and Nancy
