English M 1907 bayonet. First pattern with hook by EFD. Unit marked to the Royal Berkshire Regiment. (ABCN1022)(K316)(JN57-2)
British Lee Enfield (SMLE) No.7 rifle. First pattern with hooked quillon and no oil hole in the pommel. Excellent bright finished blade. First 2 cm blackened. Ricasso is crisp marked with the English maker mark: EFD (=Enfield Arsenal) and Crown over ER over 1907 over a very crisp date: 11'08. Two clear British (Enfield) inspection marks, Crown over X5 over E. /I\, X, on the reverse side of the ricasso. Excellent blued pommel with muzzle ring and hooked quillon. MRD 16,5 mm. Pommel shows a crisp British unit marking: B R K over R. 786 (= The Princess Charlotte of Wales - Royal Berkshire Regiment, Rifle No. 786).
Excellent dark walnut grips secured by two screw bolts top the blade tang..
Excellent early London brown leather scabbard with blued mounts. Top mount with and a olive shape frog stud and three rivets. Top mount is marked: Crown over 3P over B. Leather body is crisp marked: A. C., /I\, '17 and two Enfield inspection markings. All stitches are intact and there are no dents to the mounts.
Beautiful early genuine unit marked, First model No.7 bayonet in an Excellent condition.
1st Battalion 1914 First World War
The 1st Bn was at Aldershot when war was declared on the 4th August. They departed for France on the 12th August 1914 and participated in the fighting withdrawal from Mons as part of 6th Brigade, of the 2nd Division. Their first major action was at the Bridge on the Sambre 25th/26th August near the village of Maroilles. The final point of the Retreat was reached on 7th September when they reached Le Poteau. They had marched 236 miles in 15 days, with only one days halt, an average of 15.7 miles per day. The flow of fighting was reversed on 9th September when they crossed the Marne and then the Aisne on the 14th. They then settled into trench warfare based at La Metz Farm. The Battalion were involved in the 1st battle of Ypres from the 22nd October to the 13th November. They went into Divisional reserve on the 15th November and spent the winter in and out of trenches.Their actions since August were summed up by the Brigadier on the 21st December when they marched into Caestre when he said “Splendid, just as you have always fought”.Christmas day was spent in the trenches. The battalion did not take part in the Christmas truce.
