"Nederlands Politie (Rijks Veldwacht ) Klewang No.1. "/ Dutch Police (State Rural Constabulary) klewang/Cutlass No.1. Serial number: RVW over 8104 on the guard. Excellent++ deep blued fullered klewang blade with clip point. The ricasso is crisp marked with the Dutch makers name: HEMBRUG. A Dutch inspector marking Crown over Z. on the reverse ricasso. Excellent++ wide open blued steel hand guard. The detachable hilt is marked with a small Dutch inspection marking: Crown over Z.
Excellent+ two piece wooden grip secured to the blade tang by three brass rivets. Left grip is marked: R V over 8104. Sword knot slit in the upper part of the guard.
Excellent black leather scabbard. All stitches intact, and there is an internal retaining spring. Scabbard body is marked: RVW 3212 (= RIJKS VELD WACHT No. 3212) and throat is marked: RE. The klewang was carried with a Sam Browne belt. Therefore the carrying strap is cut away. Steel chape is fixed with by a tow winding.
Note: The State Rural Constabulary, in Dutch known as the "Korps Rijksveldwacht", was erected in 1856, but it received formalised uniforms and armament only two years later. After series of changes in regulations, the last alteration took place of 10 March 1932 and a sword or klewang is prescribed for the first time. With the surrender of the Dutch forces in 1940 the State Rural Constabulary effectively ceased to exist.
