German M 1914, type 2, by Gottscho (ABCN784-1)(K249)(JN88-4)
Mauser M 1888 rifle. Beautiful bright finished blade with a wide fuller on both sides. German maker's logo: G in a vacuum tube (= Dr. Lucian Gottscho - Berlin) and a capital K S on the ricasso. Crisp German inspection marking on the blade spine. Very good- bright finished pommel with TO- slot and crossguard with back swept quillon. Quillon with light peppering only. Flat pommel shows peppering and light to moderate pitting. Catch works fine. Excellent and intact one piece beach wooden grip wrapped around the blade tang and fixed by two screw bolts. Round oil hole. Grip has 9 short ribs. No flashguard.
Excellent and correct very very fine peppered steel tapered scabbard with only a few small dents to the reverse side. Its large throat is fixed to the scabbard body with two screws. Ball finial .
Comes with its Excellent very thick brown WWI leather frog with 4 alloy rivets and no central stitching as found. Hard to read makers name in a box on the reverse.
Super rare bayonet! It was designed by Dr. Lucian Gottscho of Berlin and was called "The Machine-Gunner bayonet" It was made in very limited numbers and mainly issued to Bavarian units.
