Belgian M1848-68 Jaeger Carbine. System Terssen / Belgian M 1870 Comblain rifle of the Civil Guard. Rifle number: 1668 in the mortise slot. Very good long fullered yatagan blade with typical Belgium marking: Crown over MD in a trilob followed by the year of production: 1869 on ricasso. P in a diamant shape and a number: 1 on the reverse side. The blade shows user spurs and some areas of very fine staining only. Excellent single piece brass hilt with much more rounded pommel then a Chassepot bayonet. External square spring fixed by a screw, Crossguard with muzzle ring MRD 17.1 mm and fastening screw on top. Slot is marked with a small C in a circle. Fast forward swept quillon with marking on the final : P in a diamant shape.
This model is hard to find in its black leather scabbard with brass fittings. Over the years many were replaced by a steel scabbard. This one comes in an excellent blued all steel dents free scabbard with no markings nor serial number.
Quite a scarce bayonet.
The bayonet is officially called: Belgian M 1868 Terssen carbine bayonet but it was also used with the Belgian M 1870 Comblain rifle of the Civil Guard.
