Mannlicher M 1895 Infantry rifle. Serial number: 4748 M on the right side of the crossguard and 783 on the reserve side. Very nice dark blued pommel and crossguard marked: Crown over B. Stacking hook removed. Muzzle ring MRD 14 mm. Excellent wooden grips secured with two steel rivets. Very nice tooled brown leather scabbard with a reposition retaining strap. All stitches intact.
This is a scarce modified first model Dutch Marines bayonet, later modified and issued to the infantry.
From 1895 til 1900 the first stacking hook models were made in Austria by OEWG- STEYER and later, from 1900 until 1905 smaller numbers were made in Germany - Solingen by Alexander Coppel and Weyersberg & Kirschbaum.
After 1904, they were only produced by HEMBRUG in the Netherlands. Later, around 1915 they were produced without a stacking hook.
First models with stacking hooks were also issued to the Dutch marines but later replaced by models with a single screw/plate in the grips. These first issued Marine bayonets were then issued to the infantry and around 1915 modified by removing the stacking hook. Modified bayonets have two serial numbers. An old Marine serial number and a new Infantry serial number.
Also the scabbard was modified by reposition the retaining strap. The old holes are still visible.
A very interesting transformation!
