Dutch Marechaussee used M 1876 No.1 troopers sword.
"Nederlandse Marechaussee gebruikte M 1876 No.1 Manschappen sabel "/ Dutch Marechaussee used M 1876 No.1 Troopers sword. Very good- heavy long bright finished fullered blade. Blade shows graying and pitting. Leather washer intact. Ricasso is marked with the German makers trademark: S & K (= Schnitzler & Kirschbaum. - Solingen) and the reverse ricasso shows a date: 1860 and an early Dutch inspection marking: Crown over V. Excellent and large detachable bright finished hilt, a steel hand guard with knuckle bow, three side bars. The quillion is removed may be to give the hilt the shape like a M 1854 cavalry sword hilt or a M 1913 Marechaussee klewang. The hilt inside is marked; K.M. (= Koninklijke Marechaussee = Royal Military Police). Excellent fine ribbed wooden troopers grip covered with black horse leather.
Very good chromium plated scabbard with a single loos hanging ring. There is wear to the plating and unfortunately, the scabbard is missing it's throat. No serieus dents, only user spurs.
The Dutch Police and Marechaussee used a great number of (former) Dutch Cavalry swords in many different configurations and alterations. On this particular sword the blade was taken from an earlier model. We believe, given the date (1860) and the Dutch inspector marking on the ricasso, is was taken from a 1854 Cavalry troopers sword.
Total length: 97,5 cm. Blade length: 82,5 cm. and Width at the ricasso: 3,3 cm,
A very interesting Dutch M 1876 No.1 troopers sword, altered and used by the Dutch Marechaussee.
