"Nederlands Infanterie Officierssabel M 1897"/ Dutch infantry officers sword M 1897. Superb bright finished straight quilback blade. White leather washer intact. The trademark of the German maker: a crisp Knightshelmet (= Weyersberg & Co. -Solingen) on the ricasso. The reversed ricasso shows two small  initals of the owner (?): H B . The blade spine is etched with the Dutch retailers name and his Residence : P. MANSVELT & ZOON. 's GRAVENHAGE. Excellent+ bright polished steel pierced hand guard with 5 bars, engraved with flower motives. Leather washer intact. Detachable hilt with a ribbed brown composition grip with an intact silver twisted wire winding.
Excellent+ bright polished steel scabbard with one loose hanging ring. No dents to the scabbard.
Made before 1914.
Total length: 97,5 cm. Width at the ricasso 2,7 cm.

This sword was adopted in 1897 and was already replaced in 1912 by a complete different model: M 1912 infantry officers sword. It still has a ceremonial function for officers of the Dutch Princes Irene brigade. A Dutch infantry regiment, founded in England during WWII and active during and after D-day for the liberation of occupied Europe.
