Dutch M 1815 Infantry Field and General officers spadroon by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum, showing the Arms of the Kingdom of Holland.
"Nederlands Infanterie Hoofdofficiers degen M1815 " / Dutch infantry Field & General officers spadroon M1815. Excellent long straight and heavy fullered single edged bright blade with the fuller running to the tip. German makers mark: SCHNITZLER & KIRSCHBAUM on the ricasso and SOLINGEN on the reverse side. A beautiful unusual etching with traces of gilt & blue, different on both sides of the blade and on the blade spine. The etching shows the Arms of the Kingdom of Holland of 1802! A shield with the Dutch crowned rampant lion with its sword and 4 arrows in its claws!, an ancient warier, a primitive warier, guns and cannon balls, harnesses, helmets, weapons, banners, laurel, trophies etc. Red felt washer.
Beautiful gilt handle with a large urn shaped pommel. Non-folding hand guard with a quillon with a crown shaped final. Perfect wooden grip covered by a typical Dutch style silver wrap foil and not by a silver wire winding.
Total length 100 cm width at the ricasso 2,5 cm. Length of the hilt: 18 cm.
No scabbard
This spadroon model was carried by the leading Dutch Infantry General officers in the campaign during the Belgium revolution of 1831. It is a quite rare model and seldom found. (Please see the attached old drawing as a reference. It gives, in the Dutch language, more information about this model and the general officers who carried it during these 10 days of the campaign.)
According to the Dutch National War museum, this is a M 1815 Infantry Field & General officers spadroon. Used from 1815 till 1840 only. It looks very close to the German IOD M 1819 spadroon, but the dimensions are much bigger and heavier. (see last picture for a comparison.) : A.) German IOD M 1819 spadroon. B.)
