French M 1803 (An XII) Marines cutlass by the Royal Klingenthal Factory- Elsace.
French M 1803 (An XII ) Marines cutlass. Excellent bright finished plain curved blade marked 98 on the ricasso. The blade spine is maker marked an dated: Manuf.re R'ale de Klingenthal Nbre 1827 SA. ( The Royal Factory of Klingenthal - Elsac in November 1827.) Excellent heavy one piece brass hilt with a single hand guard and a forward swept quillon. Grip with 28 fine ribs. Left side of the hand guard shows Frence inspector markings: B in a chained cirle (= Controler J.G. Bick 1793 -1831), D in a circle (= Director Jean Thomas Dubocq. 1823 - 1830 )and 48 in a circle (= ) , the reverse side shows a L in a circle (= Revisor F.L. Lobstein 1804 -) . The crossguard shows a crisp naval anchor mark and the reverse side a rack number: 35 . 54.
No scabbard.
Total length: 76 cm. Width at the ricasso: 3,2 cm
Impressive French Marine cutllass. This short sword is the same as the Frence infantry briquet and was issued in a small number only to the Marines troopes.
Not easy to find Marine issued briquet!
