Dutch M 1871 Beaumont socket bayonet, Type I (K 349)(ABC N 1140) (JN 145-2)
Dutch Beaumont M 1871 single shot infantry rifle / M 1871/88 Vitali repeating infantry rifle, 11 mm. Serial number: C 913 on Socket. Excellent cruciform blade and socket. Blade length 514 mm.
First type locking ring with one single tightening screw, marked: T. MRD 17,8 mm. Shank is twice marked with stamps of Dutch inspectors: Crown over H and Crown over D. Throat is marked: BF.
Total length 582 mm.
The Netherlands accepted the 11 mm black powder Beaumont single shot infantry rifle in 1871. In 1888 the rifle was converted to a repeating rifle by adding the 4 round Vitali magazin.
In 1888 also the first model socked bayonet was improved by replacing the single screw locking ring by a one with two tightening screws.
The Beaumont M 1871/88 was already replaced in 1895 by the 6.5 mm Mannlicher rifle.
The one screw tightening ring is often described as the second model and the the two screw model as the first model, which is an error.
