Description

Dutch Beaumont M 1871 single shot infantry rifle / M 1871/88 repeating infantry rifle, 11 mm.  Second type. Locking ring with two tightening screws.  Serial number: S 421 on the shank. Excellent bright finished cruciform blade and socket. Two Dutch inspection markings on the shank:. Crown over D and L MRD 17,8 mm. Locking ring is marked: Crown over E.
Blade length 514 mm. Total length 582 mm.

The Netherlands accepted the 11 mm black powder Beaumont single shot infantry rifle in 1871. In 1888 the rifle was converted to a repeating rifle by adding the 4 round Vitali magazin.
In 1888 also the first model bayonet was improved by replacing the single screw locking ring by two tightening screws.
The Beaumont M 1871/88 was already replaced in 1895 by the 6.5 mm Mannlicher rifle.

Some authors describe the one screw tightening ring as the second model and the the two screw model as the first model, which is an error.
