German M 1884/98 bayonet, second model WWI by J.A.HENCKELS-ZWILLINGWERK-SOLINGEN as personal Great War souvenir. (ABC N 447)(JN81-2)(K 140)
Mauser M98 rifle. Excellent bright finished fullered blade with only a little field sharpening is showing the German maker's name and trademark: Twins over J.A.HENCKELS over ZWILLINGWERKE crisp on the ricasso. Prussian W over date: 17 and crown over a Gothic inspection mark also very crisp on the blade spine.
Excellent bright finished crossguard and pommel with T-O slot and a crown over a Gothic inspection marking. Excellent wooden grips secured with screws and bolts to the blade tang. Hilt with Excellent++ dents free flash guard.
Excellent + and correct bright finished scabbard with no dents.
A fine line work is carved in both grips. The left one is very nicely dated between the screw bolts: 1914-18. This carving is beautifully done and must have been the work of a veteran of the Great War. During the Great War as personal trench art, or after the War, as a souvenir.
A very special bayonet in an Excellent condition+!
