French M 1842 bayonet for the Rampart rifle. (ABCN1732-1)(K 0)(JN0)
Rampart rifle M 1842. Serial number: 65 on left crossguard. Excellent bright finished fullered yataghan blade. The ricasso is twice marked with French inspection markings: B in a circle (= Joseph Bisch ) and crown over G in a circle.(= Alexandre Gazan). Correct no blade spine marking! Excellent brass hilt with short external spring. T-slot in pommel. Mortise is marked: 1 and B in a circle. Excellent blued crossguard marked: 65 with a back swept more rounded quillon and a very large muzzle ring. MRD 26,3 mm.
Excellent+ bright finished metal scabbard with no dents.
This bayonet was made for the Rampart rifle or Wall gun. A heavy barreled gun, special made for use from the walls of a fortification.
It is not known how many were ever produced. We only know that a very small number was made in the years 1842 and 43.
After 1844 and till 1892 the blade spines of French M 1842 bayonets got an inscription with the makers name and date,
