German made European Mensur fencing sword by WEYERSBERG -Solingen.
German made European Mensur fencing sword. Excellent long fullered backened straight plain blade with a rounded tip. The ricasso is crisp marked with the German makers trade marke: Kings head ( = Gebr. WEYERSBERG - Ohligs, SOLINGEN. The trade mark was used from 1777-1841 ) and a 3 on the reverse side. Very heavy blackened detachable hilt, crudely made by 5 very large hardened thick side bars welded together and riveted to a steel guard. Excellent one piece ribbed wooden grip covered with red and brown twisted tow.
These were used with a colored detatchable canvas liner. (See last picture)
Length of sword 104 cm. Blade length 87 cm. Width at the ricasso 1.5 cm.
A very impressive, German made, interesting European Mensur sword. Made 1830-1850. Seldom seen.
We could not identify yet in which country this European fencing sword was used.
