US M 1917 bayonet by REMINGTON, Unit marked and a Danish modified M 1917 scabbard. (ABCN1041)(K322)(JN223-3)
US.30 rifle. U.S. ENFIELD/EDDYSTONE. Lee Enfield/ Eddystone M1917 rifle. Excellent parkerized fullered blade with US makers trade mark: REMINGTON in a circle and 1917 very crisp on ricasso. First two cm are blackened. On the reverse side: US, Flaming Bomb and an American inspection marking: Eagle head over 17 and X over 9. Blued blued pommel with an oil hole and crossguard. Pommel is unit marked: U over S F C over 12. Muzzle ring MRD 15,5 mm. Excellent walnut wooden grips with two nuts secured to the blade tang by two screw bolts. Left grip is marked: A.
The bayonet comes in a scarce and Excellent Danish modified NATO green painted leather US M 1917 scabbard marked GF in an oval to the mounts. Also the fittings are painted NATO green. A complex belt hook system is added to the scabbard: a Danish designed scabbard throat with an US belt hook is added on top of the existing throat, forming a double throat. A rectangular FKF marked tan webbing adapter was used to fix the bayonet on the Danish M1937 equipment belt. (See last picture for a the throat of an US M 17 scabbard.)
After WWII Denmark received a certain number of US M1917 rifles and bayonets. The bayonet was adopted as the Danish M 1917/53 bayonet. Only the scabbard became modified.
