Dutch M 1843 Naval officers sword by A.A.KNUYVER- DEN HAAG (JP 82-124)
"Nederlands marine officierssabel M 1843 "Sabel voor alle officieren, de Adelborsten 1e klas, Adjudant-Administrateur en scheepsklerken" / Dutch M 1843 naval officers sword."
Superb bright finished heavy pipe back blade, etched in panels on both sides and on the blade spine. Different etching on both panels. The panels show a Man O'war, the Dutch Royal crown over a fouled anchor, cannons and military trophies over floral motives.
The ricasso is marked with the Dutch retailers name in two lines on the ricasso: A. A. Knuyver over den Haag. Intact red felt washer.
Beautiful non-detachable brass hilt with a rich variation of ornaments. brass hand guard pierced with a Dutch Royal crown over a fouled anchor and beautiful floral motives. The white ribbed ivory grip is in a fantastic condition. This model never had a wire winding to the grip.
The brass mounted black leather scabbard with tooling is in a very good condition. It has a contemporary nicely repaired leather defect near the drag only, but all stitches are intact and there is no shrinkage. Beautiful brass screwed- on top mount with a Dutch Royal crown over a fouled anchor and two flags on one side and a scallop stud. Two brass hanging rings. Beautiful screwed-on brass chape with floral motives on both sides. No dents to the fittings.
It comes with its genuine Dutch Naval Flag officers sword knot as found also stamped: A.A. KNUYVER over den Haag on the bottom in a very good condition.
This sword belonged to a Dutch Naval Flag officer. This is an officer with a rank higher than Captain (= Commander). So it could have been an Admirals sword!
This model was introduced in 1843 and closely resembles the French M 1837 naval officers sword.
This particular one is made around 1865 or even somewhat later. This model was replaced by the model 1882.
