Enfield short rifle M 1858, Serial number: 27 on pommel. Very good- bright finished fullered yataghan blade with some small stains all over, but no pitting. Ricasso is marked in an arched line: CHAVASSE (faint) and a Birmingham inspectors mark: B over 78 over S (= Solingen made blade) and date 2/'74 on the reverse side of the ricasso. Blade spine is marked: B 44. Length fuller ca. 395 mm. Bright pommel with serial number 27 on top and 34 with a Birmingham inspection marking: B over 19 on the right side of the pommel. Crossguard with muzzle ring with cock comb, MRD 20 mm. Forward swept quillon with round ferrule. Excellent black leather grips with checkering and Birmingham inspection markings: B over 19 on both sides. Blade tang is marked H M , J BAR and A A . Four metal pins to the blade tang. Short mortise slot. External spring is 64 mm long and is secured with a screw. Bar on the band type.
Very good black leather scabbard. Steel fittings with no serieus dents and all stitches intact.

The British maker Horace Chavasse of Alma street, Aston near Birmingham-England ( 1860-1868) is known for exportation of these M 1858 sword bayonets to the Confederation during The US civil war!
Quite a scarce maker! Hard to find and well marked.
