French naval boarding cutlass M 1811 Excellent bright finished fullered blade with 3 French inspection markings on the ricasso. There is a B, an A and a L in a circle
These are from the French inspectors Bick, Lobstein and ? (1812-1813) No anchor marking, nor a spine inscription. Large and heavy blackened steel hilt with a large closed bowl guard and a steel grip. There is some little (battle?) damage to the outside rim of the guard. Typical early lobbed forward swept quillon. The hilt is totally covered with a thick layer of old black paint/tar to protect the cutlass to the influence of salty water on the ship deck.
Very rare black tooled leather scabbard. The majority of this model is found without a scabbard. The top mount is missing. Patinated brass chape without dents.
Very rare and early Napoleonic French boarding cutlass.
